Doors at Casino of the Rockies open at 11 am daily. Closing time is 11 pm on nights from Sunday to Thursday, while Friday and Saturday stretch on until 1 am. No separate holiday schedule is posted, so a look at casinooftherockies.ca before a holiday trip to Mission Road is wise. The door on Mission Road admits only those aged 19 or older, and each visit means showing government-issued photo ID. Security there can request two pieces of ID.

Live table games are no longer offered, and the tables are electronic. The 210 slot machines include E-Roulette, E-Baccarat and E-Blackjack, and the floor also has a full-service lottery centre. Each Quartz terminal runs up to eight games, Sic Bo among them, on a 26.5-inch HD touch screen. In the restaurant, the PROLINE Sportsbook Lounge has an 18-foot screen for up to six games and three betting terminals. The casino calls it the first lounge of its kind in the region.

St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino

    A resort in the valley

St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino sits on Mission Road, five minutes by car outside Cranbrook, in the East Kootenay valley. The resort is owned and operated by the Ktunaxa First Nation. Its 125 rooms and suites look out on the Hoodoos, the golf course and the mountains, including Fisher Peak. The building was once the St. Eugene Mission, a residential school for First Nations children of the region. The Ktunaxa Nation has reclaimed it.

Seasons shape a visit here. The championship golf course and the KOA RV park open April through October. The resort and casino stay open year-round, with casino hours kept on local Mountain time, the same clock as Alberta.

    The golf season

The championship course at St. Eugene was designed by Les Furber and runs beside rivers, with the Rocky Mountains behind it. It opens April through October, the same months as the KOA RV park on the grounds. Outside those months the course closes, but the rest of the resort does not. The hotel, the outdoor heated pool and the casino all stay open through the winter.

    Staying over

    Staying the night

Hotel check-in at St. Eugene begins at 4 pm, with check-out set for 11 am. The historic Mission building holds 25 of the 125 rooms and suites. Windows across the resort face the Hoodoos, the golf course and the Purcell or Rocky Mountains, Fisher Peak among them.

The outdoor heated pool is open year-round, and the resort also has hot tubs, a sauna and a fitness centre. Hotel guests get free WiFi. Some rooms are pet-friendly, so a pet can come along.

        Where to eat

Kiʔsuʔk k̓ikiⱡ, Ktunaxa for "good food", is the restaurant and bar set on a raised level over the gaming floor. Its bar keeps a Sunday to Thursday schedule of 11 am until 10:30 pm, stretching to 12:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays. On those two weekend nights the kitchen is busy between 11 am and 11 pm. The rest of the week it also starts at 11 am, and anyone hoping to sit down after 10 pm should phone 250-417-2772 ahead.

Numa Lounge & Dining sits in the Mission building, not inside the casino, and its name means "thunder" in Ktunaxa. It has views of Fisher Peak and the golf course. Breakfast is served every day, 7 am to 11 am. Wednesday to Sunday, dinner runs 5 pm to 9:30 pm, and the lounge is open 4 pm to 11 pm.

        Ktunaxa land and the Mission

Four Ktunaxa communities and the Kenpesq't (Shuswap Indian Band) own the resort together as St. Eugene Mission Holdings Limited. The casino opened in 2002. Two partners joined in 2004, Samson Cree Nation from Alberta and Rama First Nation from Ontario. On June 20, 2017, the four Ktunaxa communities again became the sole owners of the resort and casino.

Renovation began on April 8, 2019, and the casino reopened on July 19, 2019. Its 19,000 square feet use a nature-based design that honours the Ktunaxa Nation's connection to the earth. In the Mission building, the Ktunaxa Interpretive Centre, run by the Ktunaxa Nation Council, opens Monday to Friday 9 am to 4:30 pm. It is closed weekends, and tours must be booked in advance.

        Playing online in BC

BCLC operates PlayNow.com, British Columbia's own site for online gambling and the only one that is legal in the province. The IGCO, the provincial gambling regulator, states that any other site admitting BC players is operating illegally in British Columbia.

On its home page, Cranbrook Casino Valley Notes runs paid links marked Ad. Their destination is a privately run online casino, neither PlayNow.com nor run or licensed by British Columbia. BC residents who play on it lose every provincial protection. Neither PlayNow limits nor Game Break cover play there, and the IGCO cannot receive complaints about it. The Kootenay Valley desk earns a commission from this partner, and the partner may change.
